Alec and Hilaria Baldwin are revealing how their family came together during a tragedy.
In 2021, when Alec was shooting the western film Rust he held a prop gun which went off — although Alec denies pressing the trigger — the bullet killed Halyna Hutchins, the film’s cinematographer and injured Joel Souza, its director. The incident led to Alec’s involuntary manslaughter trial, which was dismissed last year. A few weeks before Alec was tried, he and his wife opened up their home to film the upcoming reality TV series The Baldwins, where they mention the events that transpired. Alec and Hilaria explained to People in its latest cover story why it was important to film their most vulnerable moments.
“It was an opportunity for us to actually speak. It was a really safe space,” Hilaria said. “And I think it was also very cathartic, almost like a diary, during a very unsure time of our life. That felt both terrifying and like it could get us through day by day.”
For Alec, the show was a chance to also spend more time with his and Hilaria’s seven children. “We did the show because it’s in place of doing a movie or a play. Now I think to myself, ‘Am I going to be away from my kids five nights out of the week until 11 o’clock at night?’ For me, work-related things really aren’t that critical anymore. I thought, ‘I get to spend time with my family.’”
Alec added that his wife’s support helped him. “We’re leaning into gratitude every single day,” he said. “The simple beauties of life can get you through hard moments.”
The reality series will feature the couple discussing numerous hot topics. “Throughout the season, The Baldwins will feature hilarious moments around the dinner table to candid discussions about mental health and their ever-evolving parenting style. The series shows what life is really like for the Baldwins — chaotic, funny, exhausting and filled with love,” reads the official logline. “Alec and Hilaria’s dynamic as a couple will also take center stage, with moments that showcase their deep partnership as they navigate challenges hand in hand. With seven children in tow, the Baldwin household is never short on activity, but through it all, Alec and Hilaria embrace the madness with an infectious energy, showing viewers the beauty of raising a family that’s anything but ordinary.”
The Baldwins will premiere on TLC on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 10 p.m.
