Having completed two months in theaters worldwide, Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World is nearing the end of its run. It’ll soon debut on digital, where new audiences will hopefully be able to check it out. Not too many people, relatively speaking, showed up to watch the film in theaters. Brave New World remains one of the lowest-grossing installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — the biggest film franchise in global box office history. That being said, it passed a couple of landmark superhero movies on its way out.
With $413 million in the bank so far at the global box office, Brave New World has now overtaken the $412 million lifetime global haul of Tim Burton’s Batman, which set records during its original run in 1989. The movie has also overtaken the $406 million lifetime global haul of X-2: X-Men United, often considered one of the greatest comic book movies ever made. Brave New World is only $3 million shy of overtaking The Wolverine to become one of the 60 highest-grossing superhero movies of all time. The list is topped by Avengers: Endgame, which grossed $2.7 billion globally only five years ago, and featured Brave New World star Anthony Mackie in a supporting role.
Between the two films, Mackie appeared in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. He’s been a part of the MCU for over a decade, having debuted in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Unfortunately, his grand starring debut didn’t connect with audiences, and was poorly received by critics. It holds a “rotten” 48% approval rating on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes — the second-lowest in MCU history. The movie also battled negative publicity in the run-up to its release, with reports of usually lengthy re-shoots. Brave New World is directed by Julius Onah, and produced on a reported budget of $180 million.
‘Brave New World’ Under-Performed, Both Critically and Commercially
Burton’s Batman broke box office records back in 1989, and spawned a direct sequel, Batman Returns. It remains well-regarded all these years later, despite the character having gone through numerous creative overhauls. X-2, on the other hand, remains relevant to the MCU’s future, as several stars who featured in it are supposedly set to reprise their roles in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Hugh Jackman has already reasserted his authority over the role of Wolverine, which he reprised in last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine. You can still watch Brave New World in theaters, or you can wait for it to hit digital next week.
