Diane Kruger managed to evade the wrath of Cannes’s new dress code on Thursday, stepping out at the festival in a sheer dress that didn’t break its anti-nudity rule.

The German actress attended the premiere of the French film Case 137 in a blue sequined Prada gown with a matching floor-length shawl. Kruger’s look melded the mermaidcore trend with Old Hollywood glamour. Dainty diamond-encrusted hoops and a matching chainlink bracelet completed her ensemble.

Kruger’s blonde tresses were slicked back and styled with finger waves secured by a satin turban. Her makeup, meanwhile, consisted of pewter eyeshadow and mauve lips.

Cannes’s charter was updated with the following language on Monday: “For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival. Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater are not permitted,” it reads. “The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.”

In previous years, stars including Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Ashley Graham have favored barely-there fabrics and massive trains at the weeklong festival, which officially commenced on Tuesday.

Halle Berry was one of the dress code’s first victims. She had to abandon a Gaurav Gupta number for the festival’s opening night as it had “too big of a train,” she revealed to reporters at a photocall earlier this week. “I’m not going to break the rules,” she added. “The nudity part is also probably a good rule.”

Instead, Berry opted for a sleeveless Jacquemus gown printed with black and white stripes. The high-neck frock also included an unexpected bustle detail at the back.
