The story behind Natalia Grace may finally be closed on the ID Channel docuseries The Curious Case of Natalia Grace that came to an end last month, but the saga continues thanks to Hulu and their new dramatization of events in Good American Family. The eight-part miniseries stars Grey’s Anatomy‘s Ellen Pompeo and Creep‘s Mark Duplass as Kristine and Michael Barnett, the parents who adopted Grace from Ukraine in 2010.

A new trailer for the series (seen below) showcases what’s to come from the Hulu original, which bares a striking resemblance to 2009’s Orphan, which, contrary to popular belief, was not based on Grace’s story. “I’ve always considered myself blessed. I’ve known I was put on this Earth to build a world where all kids can feel safe,” Pompeo says as the trailer begins. From there we see Imogen Faith Reid in her acting debut as Grace. “Are you going to be my Mommy and Daddy?” she asks in a wonderful display of cheesy dialogue. From there, the trailer descends into a clear-cut thriller that presents Grace’s story as only Hollywood can, complete with embellished details and creative liberties.

From charming strangler Ted Bundy to ‘Night Stalker’ Richard Ramirez, iconic films have been made about the most unscrupulous murderers to ever exist.

In addition to Pompeo, Duplass, and Reid, Good American Family also stars Dulé Hill, Christina Hendricks, Sarayu Blue, and Jenny O’Hara. The series was created by Katie Robbins – who also serves as showrunner alongside Sarah Sutherland – and, based on the synopsis, looks to tell Grace’s story like never before.

“Told from multiple points of view, as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias, and trauma, this compelling drama is inspired by the disturbing stories surrounding a Midwestern couple who adopts a girl with a rare form of dwarfism. But as they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, mystery emerges around her age and background, and they slowly start to suspect she may not be who she says she is. As they defend their family from the daughter they’ve grown to believe is a threat, she fights her own battle to confront her past and what her future holds, in a showdown that ultimately plays out in the tabloids and the courtroom.”

Ellen Pompeo Admits ‘Good American Family’ Isn’t a “Beat-for-Beat” Retelling of Grace’s Story

Taking on the role of Dr. Meredith Grey in 2005, Good American Family marks Pompeo’s first acting job in 20 years where she’s not playing the beloved Grey’s Anatomy character. “I just thought taking this on would be a land mine,” she told Vanity Fair last month, adding: “This is a scary thing for me to even entertain because it’s intense stuff, and it deals with children and it deals with children who are neurodivergent and have disabilities. This just seems like really tricky stuff.”

When it comes to the series dramatizing Grace’s story, she admitted that it does add a bit of Hollywood flare to it, and isn’t an exact recreation. “We’re coming up with our own version of what this story could have been, so this isn’t sort of a beat-for-beat of what their experience was,” she said. “It’s really what we do here, I guess, in Hollywood. We make entertainment that hopefully provokes thought, and we take a set of circumstances and put our spin on it.”

You can see for yourself how Good American Family blends fiction and reality when it makes its Hulu premiere with the first two episodes on Mar. 19, with the remaining six airing weekly.
