Tina Fey reacts to a fake poster that imagines a modern-day remake of The Golden Girls. The sitcom was a show about the tales of four previously married, aging women who live together in a house in Miami. The series ran from 1985 to 1992, spanning seven seasons and nearly 200 episodes. The main quartet was played by Betty White, Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty. The Golden Girls is now considered an iconic sitcom of its decade, and has inspired other shows, including the spiritual spinoff Hot in Cleveland, which also featured White in a key role.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Fey reacts to a fake poster for The Golden Girl. The fan-made AI poster replaces the original quartet with Fey, Amy Poehler, Lisa Kudrow, and Maya Rudolph. Fey got a kick out of the fact that this poster was “fooling people,” noting its inartistic nature (due to the fact that two people were costumed and two were not). The comedian added that “if this fooled you, you might be a boomer.” She also praised the original series, saying “those ladies can’t be touched.” Check out the full quote from Fey below:

What This Means For A Golden Girls Reboot

The Golden Girls Creator Doesn’t Want A Reboot

The mock poster is not the first time that a Golden Girls reboot has been mentioned. A reboot of the series has been rumored for several years, with some even tying Fey to the project. In a 2017 interview, however, creator Susan Harris assured people that there was no reboot in the works. She said that she and her team have been approached about making Golden Girls the Musical or a reboot TV series at some point, but believe that “Golden Girls would not be Golden Girls without that cast.” Fey echoes this sentiment, calling the original cast untouchable.

Not all the AI poster’s proposed Golden Girls cast members are even the correct ages for the roles. Arthur, White, McClanahan, and Getty were 63, 63, 51, and 62, respectively, when the series began. Fey (54), Poehler (53), and Rudolph (52) are all older than McClanahan, the youngest Golden Girls cast member, but only Kudrow (61) is closer to the ages of Arthur, White, and Getty. As such, the four actors would not even quite be the appropriate casting age-wise if they were to make a Golden Girls reboot now.

Some Shows Do Not Need To Be Remade

There are times when remakes of older TV shows go well. I would argue that, until it went off the rails due to a distribution change, the modern version of One Day at a Time, which makes the leading characters a Cuban-American, is more layered than its 1970s counterpart. That said, if both the Golden Girls team and fans of the series do not want a reboot to happen, it is probably best that the story be left in the past.
