No fortune cookie could have predicted this, but Freaky Friday, starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, has surged up the Disney+ streaming charts ahead of its long-awaited legacy sequel – that promises an even Freakier Friday – releasing in theaters this August. In anticipation of the follow-up film, Disney fans are seemingly getting their freak on once more and revisiting the 2003 body-swap comedy directed by Mark Waters.
22 years after its theatrical release, Freaky Friday is a hit again, earning a respectable slot on the Disney+ streaming charts in the United States. At the time of writing, the movie currently ranks at #7 in the streaming service’s Top 10, positioned between the MCU’s Spider-Man: Homecoming at #6, and Avengers: Age of Ultron at #8. In fact, seven of the ten titles in the list are occupied by Marvel movies or TV shows, which makes Freaky Friday‘s placement stand out from the crowd, which, in this case, is a crowd of superheroes.

The Sequel to ‘Freaky Friday’ Promises an Even ‘Freakier Friday’
Disney confirmed that a Freaky Friday sequel was in development in May 2023, with Curtis and Lohan set to reprise their beloved roles. Details of the title and plot along with a first look arrived at D23 in August of the following year. The follow-up film, aptly titled Freakier Friday, will pick up “years after Tess and Anna endured an identity crisis,” according to the sequel’s official synopsis. “Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.”
Curtis and Lohan are joined in the cast by several other returning stars from the original movie, including Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao, alongside new additions Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan. Manny Jacinto, best known for his roles in The Good Place and The Acolyte, is also in the mix, and it sounds like he is starring in a key role that might raise a few questions for fans of the 2003 movie.
