A Sony Spider-Man movie transformed a relatively obscure Marvel villain into a truly sinister threat, and now the character’s upcoming rematch with Miles Morales is setting the stage for his big comeback in the comics. As Spidey embarks on a five-part series exploring the new Ultimate Universe, his long-awaited showdown with his best movie nemesis could be one of Marvel Comics’ most thrilling moments of the year.

…Spot has the potential to be one of Miles Morales’ greatest villains…

Marvel recently released details about the Ultimate Universe’s first big crossover and Miles Morales’ central role in it. The synopsis for Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #1—written by Deniz Camp and Cody Ziglar, with art by Jonas Scharf—teases not only a multiversal team-up between Miles and Earth-6160’s Peter Parker but also the long-awaited showdown between Miles and his Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse antagonist, the Spot.

As a lesser-known character in Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery, Spot’s role in Miles’ second movie was initially a surprise, but he ultimately became one of Miles’ top villains.

Despite their feud fueling some of the best moments in the Spider-Verse sequel, Spot and Miles Morales have never truly interacted in the comics in a meaningful way—however, that’s officially changing this summer. Spot’s role in Miles’ latest alternate-universe adventure remains vague, as the synopsis only reveals that the villain will attack, forcing Miles to team up with Ultimate Spider-Man’s version of Peter Parker. This iteration of Spot could be a pre-existing version of the character or may even turn out to be Earth-6160’s own twist, possibly with a connection to The Maker.

In Marvel’s main continuity, Spot was technically part of the Sinister Six lineup that battled Miles in an arc culminating in a showdown against the Champions in Spider-Man #239 by Brian Michael Bendis and Jan Bazaldua. However, Miles was more focused on his uncle Aaron’s involvement in the villainous superteam, leaving the fight against Spot to his Champions teammates. Since Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse transformed these two previously unrelated characters into thrilling rivals, their long-awaited comic book showdown instantly makes Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #1 a must-read.

Spot & Miles’ Rivaly Is Becoming Official Comic Canon

Spot was a relatively unknown villain to casual fans before his movie appearance, but he has always had interesting powers and a cool design that makes him unique among Spider-Man’s many enemies. Created by Al Milgrom and Herb Trimpe, Spot debuted in 1984 as a scientist hired by Kingpin. He gained his powers while attempting to recreate the abilities of the superhero Cloak. Dr. Jonathan Ohnn accidentally fused with the Spotted Dimension, creating his black-and-white polka-dot appearance, which he can manipulate and travel through via portals. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse reimagined the villain’s origin by tying it to Miles Morales and also gave him a massive multiversal upgrade.

The character had fans before, but there’s been renewed interest in Spot after he was transformed into the biggest and baddest villain in Miles Morales’ animated trilogy. Now, Marvel Comics is finally bringing Spot back in a way that could match how the movie powered him up, placing him in a multiverse-hopping adventure. One of the scariest aspects of Spot’s film appearance is the implication that he’ll be responsible for the death of Miles’ father. Spot’s threat against Spidey’s family might also be reflected in Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion, as it has been teased that Miles’ sister will be lost in the universe during the event.

Even though the villain hasn’t traditionally been a major member of Peter Parker’s rogues’ gallery, the 2023 movie proved that Spot has the potential to be one of Miles Morales’ greatest villains overall. It would be exciting to see that solidified moving forward. Spot’s comics upgrade to the official archnemesis of Miles’ Spider-Man has the potential to enrich the lore of both characters. Casual fans saw Spot become a seriously terrifying Marvel villain on the big screen, with a violent vendetta against Miles, and there’s a real opportunity to bring that more malevolent energy to the comics.

With The Maker and Earth-6160’s large cast of terrifying villains potentially plaguing the event, Spot could end up playing only a minor role in Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion. However, it’s still a notable development for both him and Miles. While fans wait for the repeatedly delayed follow-up to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, readers can get their fix as Marvel Comics finally reflects Spot’s upgrade. Being thrust into the new Ultimate Universe will be pivotal for Miles Morales, but a reinvigorated rematch against the underrated Spider-Man villain—one that truly establishes their high-stakes rivalry—could be the best thing to come out of the crossover.
