Saturday Night Live is marking a major milestone: This weekend, the iconic sketch comedy show from creator Lorne Michaels is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a slew of events in New York City.
The festivities kicked off on Friday evening, with the SNL50: The Homecoming Concert at Radio City Music Hall. Naturally, the red carpet was a star-studded affair. Given SNL has welcomed hundreds of A-list hosts and musical guests over the years (it’s hard to think of a big star who hasn’t made a cameo on the show), it was only fitting that many celebrities joined the fun. Among those who walked the step and repeat on Friday were Miley Cyrus, Chris Pine, Christine Baranski—each one of them bringing some good, old-fashioned glitz and glamour to the party.
Inside the historic venue, Lady Gaga performed “Shallow” with Andy Samberg, and did a funny bit to botch the song, before performing “Dick in a Box”—their 2009 SNL parody banger. Gaga, in a velvet black dress, stood with a zany giftbox taped to her waist—three guesses as to what they’re insinuating is inside. Miley Cyrus took to the stage in her gothic showgirl glory to perform “Flowers”, do a cover of Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” with Brittany Howard, and shout that she loves Paul Rudd. Cher also performed “If I Could Turn Back Time,” well as Bad Bunny, Post Malone, The Backstreet Boys, The B-52’s, and Will Ferrell and Ana Gasteyer (who did their own hilarious versions of songs like Doechii’s “Denial is a River.”
The celebrations continued on Sunday night, with the official SNL50: The Anniversary Special airing on NBC. Another step and repeat premiere was held for the release—and even more celebrities came out for the viewing party.
