Editor’s note: The below contains spoilers for Matlock Episode 11.
Honesty is a central theme in the latest episode of CBS‘s hit series Matlock. In Episode 11, “A Traitor in Thine Own House,” Matty comes closer than ever to having her true identity exposed, forcing her to spin even more lies to protect her cover. After passing the Autry case to Billy (David Del Rio) in Episode 10, Matty faces the wrath of Sarah (Leah Lewis), who is furious over being overlooked, believing she’s the better lawyer. In retaliation, Sarah teams up with human lie detector Shae (Yael Grobglas), who has been suspicious of Matty from the start. Together, they dig into Matty’s past, forcing her to call in reinforcements to protect her secrets. While Matty’s work troubles create plenty of drama, the heart of the episode lies in her relationship with her husband, Edwin (Sam Anderson), who, as it turns out, is hiding his own secrets.
Matty and Edwin Go Up Against a Human Lie Detector in ‘Matlock’ Episode 11
In the final moments of Episode 10, Matty is forced to choose Billy over Sarah to take over the Autry case in an attempt to cover for why she’s snooping in Billy’s desk. In Episode 11, Sarah remains cold and distant towards Matty, which doesn’t go unnoticed by her boss, Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) or Shae. Sensing an opportunity, Shae approaches Sarah about her attitude towards Matty, and the two decide to team up to uncover the truth about who Matty really is. Meanwhile, Matty doesn’t trust Shae, especially after it is revealed that Shae was the one having the affair with Julian (Jason Ritter). She has also been added to Matty’s suspect list as one of the people who could be part of the Wellbrexa cover-up, which adds to the tension when they’re forced to work together.
Matty is familiar with Shae’s cold stare, but this time it throws off her game, especially when she notices that Shae and Sarah are looking into her past, including the Georgia law firm that she has on her resume. To further mess with Matty’s head, Shae deliberately leaves an article open on her laptop for Matty to see, letting her know what her and Sarah have been up to. This tactic, as well as Sarah watching her get on the bus to leave work, sends Matty into a spiral of paranoia. On the brink of another panic attack, she confides in Edwin, who calms her down and devises a brilliant plan to protect her. The plan involves their grandson Alfie (Aaron Harris) planting a fake article to lead Shae to believe there’s someone from Matty’s past who will reveal the truth about her.
Fortunately, the scheme works when Shae travels to Georgia, expecting to meet one of Matty’s “former colleagues.” Instead, she’s sitting across from Edwin, who is playing the part of a Southern lawyer, who is, of course, singing Matty’s praises. The reveal of Edwin at this moment isn’t surprising, but his participation at this level marks a shift in their dynamic. Edwin has been conflicted about Matty’s work at Jacobson Moore ever since her last panic attack, so stepping in to play a role and meet not only someone Matty works with but also the human lie detector signals that he’s becoming more deeply involved. He also uncovers key information about Shae’s past in marketing, which leads them to suspect that her connection to the Wellbrexa case may be tied to the marketing of the opioid drug. This revelation helps explain why Senior (Beau Bridges) seems uneasy around Shae, even asking Matty not to file any further complaints about the jury consultant. While it’s heartwarming to see Matty and Edwin working together and gathering evidence to get justice for their daughter, their evolving dynamic hints at potential drama in their marriage.

Edwin Is Keeping Secrets of His Own in ‘Matlock’ Episode 11
Matlock has already touched on tensions between Edwin and Matty, especially regarding Alfie’s involvement in the case and, more recently, their search for Alfie’s birth father. Edwin had promised to look for an email sent by Ellie’s friend after her death, but in the final moments of the episode, he tells her he wasn’t able to track it down. Matty is disappointed, believing they’ve reached a dead end, but it’s soon revealed that Edwin actually has the email on his phone and chose to lie to her about it. This growing secrecy hints at a deeper rift forming between them that could lead to potential heartbreak – for them, and for us.
If Edwin becomes more involved in helping Matty while also keeping secrets of his own, it could mark a significant turning point in their marriage. If he decides to launch his own investigation to find Alfie’s birth father behind Matty’s back, it could threaten the bond they’ve managed to maintain, which has already been tested multiple times this season. While a breakthrough in the Wellbrexa case is imminent, the real question will be if Matty is prepared to learn the truth, especially if the culprit turns out to be Olympia, the one person Matty has convinced herself is not involved. On top of that, discovering Edwin’s actions behind her back could cause major turmoil, further complicating their personal lives and Matty’s ability to maintain her cover at work.
The show seems to be setting the stage for serious emotional fallout for Matty and Edwin, which would be heartbreaking for them and for the audience. The real test of their marriage will come when they realize they need to rely on each other, especially as the chaos and looming threats at Jacobson Moore continue to intensify. They’ll need each other more than ever, not just to get the justice for Ellie that they’ve been searching for, but also to keep their family together.
Matlock continues Thursdays at 9 PM on CBS. Episodes are available to stream the next day on Paramount+.
