Matthew Goode is a Detective in Edinburgh in ‘Dept. Q’ Series Trailer

“You want us… to investigate us?” “We need to give the cage a good rattle.” Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a streaming series called Dept. Q, yet another new crime thriller mystery series trying to connect with true crime lovers. Set for release on streaming at the end of May – in just a few weeks from now. Carl, a former top-rated detective who is wracked with guilt following an attack that left his partner paralyzed and another policeman dead. On his return to work, Carl is assigned to a cold case division that will consume his life. A new series from the writer and director of The Queen’s Gambit, Scott Frank – in Dept Q., Matthew Goode stars as DCI Carl Morck, a brash but brilliant detective leading a cold case unit in Edinburgh, where he heads up an unlikely team of misfits in solving various cold cases. Dept. Q is a nine-part crime procedural series from Netflix and Left Bank Pictures. Aside from Goode, this series features Chloe Pirrie, Alexej Manvelov, Kelly Macdonald, & Leah Byrne. This looks better than most detective series – I’m curious.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Scott Frank’s series Dept. Q, direct from Netflix’s YouTube:

Dept. Q Poster

DCI Carl Morck is a brilliant cop but terrible colleague. His razor-sharp sarcasm has made him no friends in Edinburgh police. After a shooting leaves a young pc dead, and his partner paralysed, he finds himself exiled to the basement & sole member of Department Q; a newly formed cold case unit. The department is a PR stunt, there to distract the public from the failures of an under-resourced, failing police force that is glad to see the back of him. But more by accident than design, Carl starts to build a gang of waifs & strays who have everything to prove. So, when the stone-cold trail of a prominent civil servant who disappeared several years ago starts to heat up, Carl is back doing what he does best – rattling cages and refusing to take no for an answer. Dept. Q is a series created and written and directed by American writer / filmmaker Scott Frank, screenwriter of Out of Sight, Minority Report, The Interpreter, The Lookout, Marley & Me, The Wolverine, Logan; and creator of “The Queen’s Gambit” & “Monsieur Spade” series. Written by Stephen Greenhorn, Colette Kane, & Chandni Lakhani. Adapted from the novels written by Jussi Adler-Olsen. With episodes directed by Scott Frank. Made by Flitcraft and Left Bank Pictures. Exec produced by Rob Bullock, Scott Frank, & Andy Harries. Netflix debuts Frank’s Dept. Q streaming on Netflix starting May 29th, 2025.
