More information on the upcoming Resident Evil reboot from Zach Cregger has come to light, with World of Reel reporting that one of the best actors working has been offered a lead role.
The newest report from World of Reel notes that Mikey Madison, fresh off an Oscar win for her starring role in 2024’s Anora, has been offered up the lead female role in Cregger’s movie. The report doesn’t mention whether or not Madison will play anyone from the Resident Evil games, or whether or not the movie will even include characters from the official games.
Should Madison take on the role, she’ll potentially join Austin Abrams, who was recently reported to have quickly emerged for a starring role in the movie. World of Reel’s report notes that the movie will follow a “hapless courier (Abrams) tasked with delivering a package to a remote hospital. He soon finds himself caught in the middle of an outbreak and must fight through hordes of mutated creatures to survive.”
What else do we know about the Resident Evil reboot movie?
Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot will be released in United States theaters on September 18, 2026. Currently, nothing is known about what Cregger’s Resident Evil movie will focus on, although early reports note that the movie will aim to be based on the game’s origins.
The legendary video game franchise has been no stranger to movie adaptations, though, with seven different films having been made dating back to 2002, most of which have starred Milla Jovovich.
Cregger is best known for his work as one of the founding members of the comedy troupe The Whitest Kids U’ Know, which he founded alongside Sam Brown and the late Trevor Moore. Cregger also directed the 2009 comedy Miss March but broke out as a director following the 2022 horror film Barbarian, which became a massive success and garnered positive praise from the horror community.
Cregger’s next film is titled Weapons and stars Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Austin Abrams, Amy Madigan, June Diane Raphael, Cary Christopher, and Clayton Farris. The film revolves around multiple related plots centered on the disappearance of school kids in the middle of the night and is set to premiere on January 16, 2026.
