Official Trailer for ‘Dogs Are People Too’ Doc Examining Dogs Rights

“The dog has a lawyer!” 🐶 Gravitas has debuted the official trailer for a fascinating documentary film titled Dogs Are People Too, made by filmmaker Hendrik Faller. After first premiering at a doc festival last year, this will be out on VOD starting in April. Another nice doggie dog – this one for animal lovers and activists. From dog-lawyers in Detroit to clone-farms in Iowa, Dogs Are People Too explores the 4-legged civil rights movement sweeping across America. Dogs might soon be considered “non-human persons”, changing the human-dog bond forever. To what extent should we be responsible for everything “our” dogs do? And is pet ownership ethical in the first place? Discussing these and many other questions in this film described as a highly informative and humor-filled documentary. Featuring Amy D, Chris Olson, Prof. Hal Herzog, Prof. Gary Francione, Joshua Morton, Roz Nenninger, Ken Savage and many others. This would play perfectly as a double feature with Laetitia Dosch’s Dog on Trial, also about dog’s rights. Another must see for dog lovers.

Dogs Are People Too Poster

From dog-lawyers in Detroit to clone-farms in Iowa, Dogs Are People Too road-trips America to follow a landmark civil rights trial over the killing of a dog. The mother of the deceased dog wants to bring those who killed her boy to justice. On her journey she steps into a world of dog-lawyers and canine rights that is bubbling under the surface of America. Her trial spotlights a conflict – whilst Americans love their dogs as family members, legally they own them as property, with no more rights than a table or chair. We look at what rights our beloved dogs really have, whilst challenging what right we have to “own” them. What follows is a four-legged civil rights movement that would see dogs considered not as property but as non-human persons. This is a global conversation – from Orangutan-personhood in Argentina to Octopuses reclassified as sentient in the UK. Is it time we reconsider the nature of our relationship with animals? 🐕

Dogs Are People Too is directed by the German filmmaker Hendrik Faller, director of the film Mountain Fever (2017) previously, and a few other shorts. Produced by Tom Miller. Made by Fantasist. This initially premiered at the 2024 Watch Docs Film Festival in Poland last year. Gravitas will release Dogs Are People Too doc available on VOD starting April 11th, 2024 – National Pet Day – this spring. Who wants to watch?
