The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live star Danai Gurira has opened up about episode 1’s surprising ending, explaining its final shocking moments. The last scene of the premiere sees Rick piloting a CRM helicopter, only for it to be attacked. After crash-landing in the woods, the attacker starts killing the survivors, only to reveal the one who brought down the helicopter is Michonne.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Gurira opened up about why The Ones Who Live premiere ended with Rick and Michonne reunited already. The actor explained that, now that they’re reunited, the story will be able to more readily focus on how they come back together after being apart for so long. Check out what Gurira had to say below:

I think it made sense. Because we had to get into the meat of the story, which is: What happens when these two people who obviously have been changed by all this time apart come back together? What does that look like with this massive barrier and obstacle of the CRM being between them? How do they get through that? What is it going to be? We can’t do that until we connect them.

More to come…
