Over a year after his last appearance as Ocean Master, Patrick Wilson has come out to share his views on the Aquaman franchise, as well as his potential return in James Gunn’s revamped DCU. The Conjuring star made his debut in the DC Extended Universe with 2018’s Aquaman before reprising his role in 2023’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. With the Aquaman sequel serving as one of the last films in pre-Gunn continuity, many have wondered what could’ve been for Patrick Wilson’s Orm if a third installment had happened. In a recent discussion, the Golden Globe nominee finally opened up about his feelings regarding Aquaman 3.

Patrick Wilson on why two Aquaman movies were enough

While some may have entertained another addition to the Aquaman film series, Patrick Wilson seems to be content with having just two entries in the franchise.

During his recent appearance on the Just for Variety podcast, the 51-year-old actor revealed whether he wanted Aquaman 3 to happen. “Was I hoping it would be more? I don’t think so,” he stated. Patrick Wilson iterated that he does not harbor a stigma “against sequels,” having led The Conjuring and Insidious franchises for years before explaining his reservations about returning as Orm in another Aquaman project.

“It’s just when you look at the structure of Orm — bad guy in the first one, basically a good guy in the second one — I don’t know where else he goes. I wasn’t signed on for a third. There was no frustration. I don’t know where the story would go. I wouldn’t be opposed to it.” Wilson noted.

Wilson isn’t sure if he could return in James Gunn’s DCU

Patrick Wilson then shed light on whether he would be open to reprising the role of Ocean Master in the updated DCU. While the Hollywood veteran confirmed his willingness to return to his Aquaman role, he seemed more skeptical than assured about the proposition. “Would I go back to it? I mean, if it’s good. Who’s directing it? What’s the story? He’s such an odd character. I don’t know where you just drop him in. It’s so strange to me,” Wilson said.

He also highlighted the changing dynamics of the DCU under James Gunn, remarking, “Also, they have taken the DC Universe in a whole different way. We had a good run. It’s okay. So, there’s not one ounce of, ‘Is there anything?’ I would totally play again if it’s worth it, but I just don’t know how.”

Aquaman and the Last Kingdom came out in December 2023 in the United States.
