Director Paul Feig is venturing into sequel territory for the first time in his career with Another Simple Favor, which is a follow-up to his 2018 hit starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively. Thus far, it’s been generating mostly positive reviews from critics after its SXSW premiere this past weekend, and while the director says he mostly likes to stick to doing original films, there are a couple of movies of his that he has sequel ideas for, including his panned 2024 action comedy that starred John Cena, Jackpot!

Speaking with Screen Rant during the premiere of Another Simple Favor on March 7, Feig not only expressed his love for Prime Video’s Jackpot!, but for his 2015 action comedy Spy, which starred Melissa McCarthy and Jason Statham. When asked if there are any plans for a sequel to either of those, the director was overcome with joy that at least someone out there was eager to see Jackpot! 2, adding that he does have ideas about how the story could continue:

“Thank you, thank you. Jackpot 2 – you made my day with that. I love Jackpot. The critics didn’t like it, but I loved it. I already know what I want the story for Jackpot 2 to be. I’m not going to go try to make all my movies into sequels – I like doing original things and new ideas – but I would say that those two would probably be the ones that would be the best served by another sequel.”

John Cena Correctly Names the Best Wrestling Movies

The WWE vet and Peacemaker star explains which movies get it right when it comes to wrestling.

Starring Cena as Noel and Awkwafina as Katie, Jackpot! centers around a former child actor who wins a $3.6 billion lottery and must fend off people trying to kill her in a future version of California. It’s a completely outrageous premise that’s reminiscent of The Hunger Games, and one that works to continue showcasing the comedic chops of Cena, who Feig says could return for the sequel. “Oh, yeah, totally,” he told Screen Rant. “We had so much fun. John and Nora [Awkwafina] and I just had the best time.”

‘Jackpot!’ Was Panned By Fans and Critics

Despite having ideas for Jackpot! 2, it’s probably best if you don’t expect the sequel to happen any time soon. While the movie was fun for what it was and managed to top the charts on Prime Video, it was largely panned by both fans and critics. It currently holds just a 31% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, while its Popcornmeter sits slightly higher at 51%. MovieWeb’s own Richard Fink called it a film that “never really lives up to its lofty ambitions” in his review, but for Feig, he said last year that critics missed the point of it all:

“All I can figure is like, from the reviews I read, I think they were trying to find a lot of meaning in this premise. I’m like, guys, the only reason I did this premise is because it’s a Jackie Chan movie. Like, just a launchpad for a very funny person to be completely in danger and not know what’s going on, and then there’s sweetness and you find out their backstories. But don’t get mad at me because I didn’t do some polemic on the state of America today. I don’t want to do that. I’m a comedy guy.”

You can currently catch Jackpot! Streaming on Prime Video, and look for Another Simple Favor to hit the streaming service on May 1. Following that, Feig will be back later this year with the psychological thriller The Housemaid, which stars Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried. Look for that one to hit theaters on Dec. 25, 2025.
