As King Charles continues to receive cancer treatment following his diagnosis last year, his wife Queen Camilla has shared what “keeps him going” on the heels of their four-day state visit to Italy last week.

“I think he loves his work and it keeps him going,” the Queen said, per the BBC. “And I think it’s wonderful, you know, if you’ve been ill and you are recovering, you’re getting better and now he wants to do more and more and more. That’s the problem.”

As to suggestions that the King might slow down his workload? “Dream on,” Camilla said.

“We’ve all tried!” she added. “But as people will have seen, the King enjoys his work, he enjoys engaging with as many people as possible.” She added, “That’s what he’s driven by—helping others.”

Following a routine procedure in January 2024 for a benign enlarged prostate, cancer was detected in the monarch. His diagnosis was announced February 5 of last year, though the specific type and stage of the disease has never been shared. (The palace did say, however, that his cancer is not prostate cancer.) Just days before Charles and Camilla left for Italy, Charles was briefly hospitalized on March 27 after experiencing an adverse reaction to cancer treatment. The hospital visit was described as a minor bump in the road, and more overseas trips like the recent one to Italy are being planned for 2025.

“He knows he is fortunate to be in a position to make a difference, and is determined to do just that,” a senior palace official said, per the BBC.

Much like the couple’s two-stop visit to Australia and Samoa last October, their Italy visit earlier this month left palace officials “delighted with how the state visit had gone,” BBC reported. A senior palace official said the visit “really showed soft power at its best,” and a senior official told the BBC that Charles had been “genuinely deeply moved by what he had seen” while there.
