Summary

  • Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 3 pays homage to Dune with a giant iceworm, akin to the sandworms in Dune: Part Two.
  • Star Wars’ iceworm is seemingly the opposite of Dune’s sandworm, burrowing through snow and being repelled by activated devices rather than summoned like the Fremen’s thumpers.
  • Star Wars has always borrowed from Dune as it was a major influence on George Lucas, seen via shared desert planets, chosen ones, galactic empires, and more.

Remarkably, Star Wars has revealed a “cool” Dune homage less than a week after the massive release of Dune: Part Two. As seen in the latest episode of The Bad Batch season 3, Omega and Crosshair have reunited with Hunter, Wrecker, and Echo, bringing the family that is Clone Force 99 back together again (sans Tech who is presumed dead). However, the episode also featured an unmistakable parallel to the Dune franchise.

The Bad Batch season 3 is largely focused on Project Necromancer and Emperor Palpatine’s ongoing attempt to grant himself immortality via Force-sensitive clone bodies. Not only does this set up Palpatine’s return in Rise of Skywalker, but it also reveals the tragic fates of several clone troopers who served the Republic once the Empire rose to power, as many became unwilling test subjects. To that end, The Bad Batch season 3, episode 5 sees Clone Force 99 looking to locate the Empire’s secret cloning facility, a new mission that includes a clear Star Wars homage to Dune.

The First Bad Batch Episode After Dune 2’s Release Features A Giant Worm

No, Seriously

Ice Wyrm in Bad Batch Season 3, Episode 5

During the Bad Batch’s return to Barton IV, Hunter and Crosshair come face to face with a giant iceworm identified by subtitles as a “wyrm”. Obviously, the timing is impeccable and quite humorous given the recent release of Dune: Part Two which prominently features the iconic sandworms that travel across the desert planet of Arrakis and are ridden by the nomads known as the Fremen. Not only does this iceworm travel beneath the snow just like Dune’s Shai-Hulud, but it also features a large mouth ready to consume all in its path.

One has to wonder if the incredible timing was intentional on the part of Lucasfilm or simply pure coincidence.

As seen in The Bad Batch season 3, episode 5, Clone Force 99 also activates devices that help repel the iceworm, rather than the “thumpers” used by the Fremen in the Dune franchise to summon the sandworms. Just like the Zillo Beast in The Bad Batch season 2 which homaged both Alien and Godzilla, it’s impossible not to think of Dune’s sandworms when this new iceworm bursts out of snow to attack these Star Wars characters. To that end, one has to wonder if the incredible timing was intentional on the part of Lucasfilm or simply pure coincidence.

Star Wars Has A Long History of Borrowing From Dune

Desert Planets, Chosen Ones, Empires

Of course, this is certainly not the first time Star Wars has borrowed elements from Dune by any means. George Lucas was influenced by multiple pieces of media when it came to his inspiration for Star Wars. As such, it’s not hard to see the large role the Dune novels played considering the desert planet of Tatooine, the tyranny of the Empire, the idea of a prophesied Chosen One, and the Sarlacc (the original sandworm equivalent).

There are several more comparisons to be made between the two sci-fi franchises. After all, there is a sort of cycle of influence where Frank Herbet’s Dune books influenced the inception of Star Wars through multiple elements and various themes. Now, Star Wars itself has helped influence Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies. That said, there’s something truly special and particularly fun about The Bad Batch’s new iceworm given the absolutely perfect timing.
