Even though I kind of, sort of stopped shopping for clothes IRL post-pandemic, I recently realized (again) how much more I actually enjoy going into the store, trying things on, and deciding whether or not I want to make them mine based on how I feel in them. So, I recently headed back to my local Gap store because, well, the spring bug bit me, and to see what I could find in its vast selection of warm-weather essentials.

On a sunny Friday afternoon, I headed over to the shop, browsed through the racks, grabbing more than I could carry, and waited in a long fitting room line (I guess a lot of people had the same idea as me!) to see what made me squirm with excitement. I tried on a lot—even stepping outside of my all-black comfort zone to introduce some color—and to my surprise , I preferred color over anything else. Naturally, I also chatted with my fellow dressing room attendees, who asked for some advice about the pieces they were trying—and honestly, what an endearing way to spend the day, not to mention a nice reminder that it’s worth talking to strangers.

Modern Apron-Neck Tank Top

I’m a sucker for a classic white tank top, but I loved that this one had an apron-neck (a.k.a. a high, straight neck) that felt a bit more modest than my usual scoop neck options. The fit was wonderful, the cotton fabric comfy, and the price tag? Obviously a steal.

Mid-Rise UltraSoft Baggy Jeans

This was a wild card because, well, color! But I kid you not: I left Gap, and these bright-yellow jeans were on my mind for the next few days. Naturally, of course, I went back to get them, because they were *chef’s kiss.* The color was beautiful; a perfectly sunny, cheery yellow that made my fellow fitting room attendees smile. The fabric was lightweight and stretchy, ideal for summer, and the wide-leg gave them a cool-girl edge. I sized up for a loose fit, but I’d definitely say they fit true to size.

Crepe Lace-Trim V-Neck Maxi Dress

Here’s the thing: I saw this dress in the racks and wasn’t blown away. I decided for the sake of journalism to still try it on—and I’m so glad I did (big lesson: always try it on even if you’re not sure of it when it’s on the hanger!). The material was so flattering and flowy, and the floral pattern was stunning, with the perfect pops of pink, red, and yellows. But I really loved the leg slit, which gave the modest dress a sexy touch, as well as the frilly sleeves and dainty lace detailing that upped the romantic vibes. 

Gap Modern Rib T-Shirt

I firmly believe that everyone should have a white ribbed tee on hand—and in multiples, at that. It’s a flattering style that’s versatile and easy to wear, and this classic style from Gap is worth adding to your rotation ASAP. At $10, it’s 100 percent worth it; the quality is exceptional, and the soft, stretchy cotton blend feels so soft against the skin.

Linen-Blend Relaxed Straight Ankle Pants

I was obsessed with these linen-blend pants the second I put them on. The cropped cut is perfect for summer because I can show off my shoes; the material is lightweight and breezy, and the pastel yellow colorway is so perfect for summer. One note: They were slightly sheer, but I wore some Spanx underneath and it solved the issue. 

Organic Cotton Poplin Big Shirt

I’m not a huge fan of button-downs, but for the sake of journalism, I grabbed this green striped one and gave it a try. I’m glad I did, because I actually think this is the perfect summer button-down—it doubles as a lightweight jacket or a cute beach cover-up, and I’m always looking for a multi-wear piece. 

Mid-Rise UltraSoft Baggy Jeans

These might look familiar, and that’s because they are. It’s the same style as the yellow jeans I tried on, but in an earthy green that I’m also all in on for summer. Again, the material is stretchy and soft, and the wide-leg silhouette is so popular right now; there’s really so much to love.

Eyelet Scoop Neck Dress

I’m so excited to wear dresses again (the ultimate one-and-done outfit!), and this super sweet eyelet option has everything I love and more. The white color is ethereal and angelic, the subtle corset detailing adds a flattering touch, and it can easily be dressed up or down. I imagine it with sneakers and a jean jacket for a picnic day or cool cowboy boots for a summer festival.

Linen-Blend Longline Vest

I’ve been dreaming of finding a longline vest like this, and I can’t believe Gap had it all along. This one does run a bit big, which I actually liked, but that’s one thing to keep in mind if you prefer a more fitted vest (size down!). The linen material is perfect for hot summer days, and the V-neck looks so flattering on.

Crochet Mesh Crewneck T-Shirt

This was another wild card pick that I’m so into. Sure, it’s a men’s style, but this is probably one of the nicest mesh sweaters I’ve ever tried. Plus, I could see it being the perfect beach cover up. It’s a bit oversized, naturally, but the burnt orange color is so stunning, and the crochet offers just the right amount of sheerness without feeling overly revealing. 

Drop-Waist Maxi Dress

I get why this dress is selling out fast; it’s easy, breezy, and so beautiful. In my mind, this is the ideal summer dress, with a blue-and-white pattern that’s equal parts casual and chic. I’m a sucker for anything drop waist (of course), and I appreciate the longer hemline and flowy skirt. But this is another find I would say to size down in, especially if you want a really snatched waist.
