The Last of Us season two premiered on April 13 with an episode that surprised a few fans. Like the video game that serves as the inspiration for the series, the apocalyptic show jumped five years into the future. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey still star as the show’s leads, but they also meet many new characters in the premiere. Even though the season has just started, it’s only six weeks away from ending with a few more episodes on the way. Luckily, the showrunners have an explanation for why this season is so short, as well as exciting news about the show’s future. Here’s what you need to know.
When and Where To Watch ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2
New episodes of The Last of Us season two air Sundays on HBO at 9 p.m. ET on HBO East and at 9 p.m. PT on HBO West. The first episode of the season has already aired, but episodes also stream on Max, so viewers who missed it can easily catch up. Episodes are released every week through April and May, with the season finale airing May 25.
How Many Episodes Does ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Have?
Season two of The Last of Us will be a little bit shorter than the first season of the show. The first season of the series had nine episodes, but Season 2 will be shorter, with only seven episodes. There’s no need for fans to worry about the low episode count as it’s part of the producers’ larger plans for the series (more on that below).
HBO’s been pretty secretive about the episode titles for the second season. Normally, HBO’s schedule labels episodes by titles, but The Last of Us is labeled with episode numbers instead. Perhaps HBO is trying to hide major spoilers connected to these titles. So far, the first episode, “Future Days,” is the only title confirmed as the episode has already premiered. IMDb has potential titles listed for later episodes, like “Every Last One of Them” for the finale, but these have not been confirmed yet.
Episode | Release Date |
---|---|
Future Days | April 13 |
Episode 2.2 | April 20 |
Episode 2.3 | April 27 |
Episode 2.4 | May 4 |
Episode 2.5 | May 11 |
Episode 2.6 | May 18 |

Is ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 the Final Season?
With The Last of Us video game series only having two entries, it seems like The Last of Us show would end with Season 2. Luckily for fans of the show, The Last of Us was renewed for a third season before the premiere. This might not be a surprise to fans of the video game, though, as The Last of Us Part II is almost 10 hours longer than the first game, depending on how fast a user plays.
Showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have made it clear that it would be hard to fit the stories of the second video game into just one season. They’ve even teased the possibility of a fourth season. In an interview with Variety, Craig Mazin said, “It feels like we’ve got one or two more seasons. It’s getting harder to make, because every episode gets big.” Mazin also said they don’t plan to go beyond the source material of the games, so expect season three or four to be the last.

Who’s Who in ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2?
The Last of Us Season 2 is filled with new characters, with only a few main cast members returning from the first season. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey return as Joel and Ellie, the two main characters. Joel was in charge of protecting Ellie in the first season, but they’ve grown apart since Joel lied to Ellie at the end of Season 1.
