An upcoming Mickey Mouse horror movie is already way better than another Mickey Mouse-inspired horror movie based on the classic Steamboat Willie short film. The horror genre is defined by trends, and there are many nowadays that have given the genre a variety of movies. As the trend of reboots and legacy sequels continues, another trend is gaining force, despite the many controversies it sparks: horror adaptations of family-friendly stories and characters. While these darker takes are not new, they have gained force since the viral and controversial release of Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey in 2023.

Winnie-the-Pooh and company aren’t the only characters who have now entered the public domain, allowing artists to do all types of reinterpretations with them. One character who recently entered the public domain was Mickey Mouse, though not as many think. Mickey Mouse’s Steamboat Willie version from the short film of the same name is now in the public domain, as is Oswald the Rabbit, the precursor of Mickey Mouse. Steamboat Willie quickly got its horror movie, and now Oswald is getting one too, and his is already looking way better than Steamboat Willie’s.

follows a group of friends who sneak into an amusement arcade after closing, but a killer wearing a Steamboat Willie mask begins to chase them.

Steamboat Willie went into the public domain on January 1, 2024, and the next day, the trailer for the slasher movie Mickey’s Mouse Trap was released. The film entered production in the summer of 2023, and director James Bailey noted that the copyright status of the character would only impact the movie’s release but not its production, hence why it could be done before the character’s public domain arrival. Mickey’s Mouse Trap follows a group of friends who sneak into an amusement arcade after closing, but their fun night soon turns into a nightmare when a killer, wearing a Steamboat Willie mask, begins to chase them.

Reactions to the first trailer of Mickey’s Mouse Trap were mostly negative, not just because most viewers found a Mickey Mouse horror movie to be completely unnecessary, but because the movie has an overused premise and the killer wearing a Mickey Mouse mask looks ridiculous instead of menacing. Mickey’s Mouse Trap isn’t the only Mickey Mouse horror movie coming up, as there’s now also Oswald Down the Rabbit Hole, based on Oswald the Rabbit, a Disney animated character who was replaced by Mickey Mouse when Universal took control of Oswald.

will star Ernie Hudson as Oswald Jebediah Coleman, an animator who is cast away to a “bone-chilling magical prison”.

Directed by Lilton Stewart III, Oswald Down the Rabbit Hole will star Ernie Hudson as Oswald Jebediah Coleman (via CBR), an animator who is cast away to a “bone-chilling magical prison”. After over a century trapped there, Oswald’s come-to-life cartoon rabbit is a menacing and gruesome creature out for blood. Oswald’s grandsons Art and Evan embark on a journey to track down their family lineage, but find themselves caught up in a horrible nightmare “transported to a place lost in time, shrouded by dark Hollywood magic”.

Not only does Oswald Down the Rabbit Hole clearly have a bigger budget than Mickey’s Mouse Trap but it also has a more creative and well-structured plot with more defined characters, and so far, it has no humans wearing a Mickey Mouse mask. Oswald Down the Rabbit Hole is using a previously created character and giving it new life, rather than simply turning him into a murderer.

How Oswald Down The Rabbit Hole Can Avoid An Ongoing Horror Trend Mistake

Oswald Down The Rabbit Hole Is One More Movie In A Current Horror Trend

Oswald Down the Rabbit
Hole already has a better cast with a well-known actor in a key role, and a more creative and well-structured story.

The trend of turning family-friendly/children’s stories and characters into horror movies is just getting started, but it hasn’t had a good beginning. Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey was panned by critics for not offering anything new and for its ridiculous Winnie-the-Pooh and Piglet masks, among many other things. Mickey’s Mouse Trap seems to be on its way to having the same fate as it’s repeating those mistakes (judging by the trailer, at least), but Oswald Down the Rabbit Hole might be on a completely different route already.

As mentioned above, Oswald Down the Rabbit Hole already has a better cast with a well-known actor in a key role, a more creative and well-structured story, and it seems to be staying away from the slasher genre, giving it many advantages over Mickey’s Mouse Trap and Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey. It’s to be seen if Oswald Down the Rabbit Hole will succeed where the rest have failed, but so far, its future is looking a lot brighter.
