Getting every category cleared in today’s Connections puzzle could be quite hard, but there are some tricks that can help you out. There are some potential issues with this one, as there are a lot of words that look like they should go together but don’t in this puzzle. This is, on the whole, a very colorful puzzle in a myriad of ways, and you should be looking for the trick before you make a guess. If you need hints, you can keep scrolling to find out what you need to do to win.

There are more daily puzzles that you can get into to satisfy your puzzling craze, and one of those games is the NYT Spelling Bee puzzle. It’s a very cute puzzle, and I think it has the best aesthetic out of the NYT games for my personal taste. It features little honey bees along with letters in honeycomb-shaped boxes. You must use the letters in the boxes in order to spell out words. The more you make, the better your score will be and the more you can boast to your friends.

Today’s Connections Category Hints

MARCH 12 #640

Cardinal in Connections Categories March 12

If you are struggling to keep up with this one, I understand why. There are some confusing combinations here, and you will have to figure out what to do with what you see when you open the game. I felt that there were a number of potential combinations that could lead you right into a pothole. However, there are some ways that I can help you navigate around those harder bits. The first of those tools are the four category clues lurking just below:

  • One category is about four things that you can find in one specific type of pastry
  • One category is about four things that share a common feature
  • One category is about four words that are related because of a certain grammatical feature rather than their definition
  • One category is about four words that come before a different word in a phrase – that word is something sweet

Yellow Answers: Revealed & Explained

INGREDIENTS IN CLASSIC POUND CAKE

BUTTER

EGGS

FLOUR

SUGAR

This was the easy category today, and it did feel easy to me. There are a lot of other food words that could misguide you, but this felt easier to distinguish because these are the most common and crucial baking ingredients in general. I don’t think this category necessarily needs to be spelled out as pound cake particularly, but I don’t mind that they did. It’s nice to know the basic recipe, after all. However, the rest of the puzzle was not quite as easy to parse out.

THINGS THAT ARE RED

CARDINAL

ELMO

KETCHUP

ROSE

There are a lot of colors in this puzzle, and having a full category about colors, but only incorporating one of those colors did not help. ROSE was the one in this category that was the trickster, as it could easily be a color or a flower or a couple of other things as well. However, KETCHUP could also be a bit of a stumbling block, as there were several food items. ROSE was the one that got me at least once, however, and I realized I was wrong by focusing on what ELMO and KETCHUP could have in common.

MONTH

ORANGE

PURPLE

SILVER

I got this one last, and it was lucky that I did. I was on my last guess when I got the purple category correct, and I just had this one left. MONTH is a big swing here, and it is weird that it is here if you don’t know the context. Additionally, it feels like COTTON EYE and JOHN SILVER should go together as referencing those characters, but I suppose I can’t have everything. I am a little sad about it, but I am happy regardless that I was able to finish off this puzzle without losing my streak.

JOHN

ROCK

I only got this one because I did swing for the wild guess that references some quite old knowledge at this point. However, I was able to see that I was just one away, and when I tried the guess with the ROCK, it made a lot of sense. However, it was hard to get this one exactly right away because I felt like there were very few clues on this one.
