I think most of us have a piece or two languishing in our closet that we love but aren’t quite sure how to wear. Maybe the garment is a style that’s outside our norm, or maybe it’s the fabric. Sometimes styling these one-off pieces requires thinking outside the box, and letting go of those “wear this with that” rules. In comments on last week’s post Styling Satin Pants: Casual to Chic Looks, a couple of you mentioned that you were struggling to style black silk joggers. So today I’m sharing some outfit ideas with silk (or silky) joggers.
Black silk joggers outfits
Pieces that can multi-task are key to getting the most out of our wardrobes. (And putting together smarter travel wardrobes.) Here are two ideas with black silk joggers, one for a more dressed-up, holiday look, the other for more casual wear.
Above, a festive-not-fussy, comfortable holiday party look. Rather than opting for an all-black outfit, you can lighten it up with grey and silver. The textured cardigan is a nice counterpoint to the silky pants and metallic finishes.
But don’t let those pants languish in the closet on more casual days. They can be a comfortable and more polished alternative to jeans or yoga pants. (Yes, they’re machine washable!)
Silky navy jogger outfit ideas
De-fuss a twinset. A matching shell and cardigan can be an easy way to look put-together. It’s a very classic combo though, and if your style personality is other than Classic, it can feel a bit too refined, stodgy even. These silky cargo joggers “funk it up” just enough. Mine are from Tibi, purchased earlier this year. There’s a zipper at the bottom of the leg; for this look I’ve worn them unzipped. Here are a few other options that are more budget-friendly:
Athleta | Ann Taylor | Cinq à Sept | Quince | Nordstrom | Eileen Fisher (velour)
Here’s a casual, sporty-chic look. Again, I’ve mashed up a more classic piece (the Fair Isle sweater) with the funky joggers and slip-on platform sneakers.
Embracing outfit “friction” to get more out of your wardrobe
“Friction” in an outfit is when the items both work together and play against each other a bit. Like mixing patterns, textures, or levels of formality in an outfit. It can keep your outfits from feeling flat and dull.
Have a dressy top you rarely wear? Pair it with your most comfortable and worn jeans. (At a recent J.Crew event I attended, one of the sales associates was wearing a chambray shirt knotted at the waist, over a full tulle skirt and ankle boots.) Don’t be afraid to break the rules to get more from your loved-but-rarely-worn pieces.
To style a “difficult” piece, start with the item type and silhouette. In the case of these joggers, we’re talking “pants” and “full/straight leg.” How would you put together an outfit with other full- or straight-leg pants in your wardrobe? Try it with these joggers or other full or fluid styles.
Do you like to create friction in your outfits? What are your favorite mixes?
I have a few more holiday looks in the pipeline, so be sure to subscribe to not miss any new posts!
