The Showtime thriller series Yellowjackets finally returned for its third season in 2025, but will the show score a season 4 renewal soon? Developed for TV by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, the series concerns a high school girls’ soccer team whose plane crashes in the wilderness of Canada in 1996. Cutting between the ’90s and the present day, the show chronicles the aftermath of their harrowing ordeal, and the consequences of what they had to do to survive. Teasing some truly gruesome mysteries, including cannibalism, Yellowjackets walks a tightrope between thrills and outright horror.

Season 3 sees things reach a fever pitch as all semblance of civilization is stripped from the remaining survivors in 1996, even as summer comes on. Meanwhile, the women in 2021 must fight to keep their precious secrets from unraveling, while also dodging deadly threats that have come back to haunt them. Despite the wait, season 3 of Yellowjackets is still one of TV’s hottest commodities, and that is good news for a potential fourth outing. While nothing is confirmed about season 4 yet, it’s highly likely that Showtime will renew the blood-soaked thriller for another outing.

Though it seems like a foregone conclusion at this point, Showtime has yet to renew Yellowjackets for a fourth season. This shouldn’t be too surprising considering the newness of season 3, but it probably won’t take long for the fate of the thriller to be decided. While the long wait may have been a nuisance, it’s pretty clear that anticipation for the latest installment hasn’t waned one bit, and Yellowjackets successfully weathered that storm. This means that viewership will likely be quite high for the third season, and that bodes well for a potential fourth.

Even if plans are in place to end the story soon, Yellowjackets should get at least one more go around, though when that news will come is tough to guess. Each season has gotten faster and faster renewal orders, but the strike-affected third season might make Showtime a little bit more hesitant to move too quickly. Though an industry-wide shutdown seems unlikely now, the network might be waiting a bit longer in order to prepare for unexpected contingencies in the production process.

As the many gruesome deaths in Yellowjackets have proven, no one is safe in either timeline. This makes predicting the cast of season 4 quite difficult, even if there are a handful of characters who have to survive in the 1996 timeline because their adult counterparts are a part of the present-day story. The duo of Melanie Lynskey and Sophie Nélisse play the adult and teenage Shauna, respectively, and Nélisse is at least guaranteed to survive. Likewise, Tawny Cypress and Jasmin Savoy Brown play adult and teenage Taissa, while Christina Ricci and Samantha Hanratty play the adult and teenage Misty.

Though her adult counterpart dies in 2021, Sophie Thatcher will return as the younger version of Nat, and Simone Kessell (2021) splits the role of Lottie with Courtney Eaton (1996). Lauren Ambrose and Liv Hewson play adult and teenage Van, respectively, while Kevin Alves plays young Travis, whose adult counterpart winds up dead in the present-day timeline. Many other returns are a lot less certain, and season 3 newcomers like Hilary Swank and Joel McHale could also play a part in future seasons as well.

Though summer comes for the group trapped in the wilderness in Yellowjackets season 3, it’s clear that things can never go back to the way they were. With the potential for tension always omnipresent, and with mysteries such as the identity of the pit girl still unresolved, it’s likely that season 4 will have a lot to work with. While season 3’s ongoing storyline will likely answer a few questions, it will just as likely pose a few new ones as well. With all that said, it’s impossible to guess what’s going to happen in Yellowjackets season 4 until the full scope of season 3’s story is known.
